Stepped into immortality: little-known heroes of the Great Patriotic War
During the years of the Great Patriotic War, the highest Soviet award – the Gold Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union – was awarded to 11,657 soldiers and officers of the Red Army, 3,051 posthumously. Feats were performed on land, sea, in the air. Not all heroes are widely known. RIA Novosti recalls some of them.

Ground attack legend
There are no safe jobs in war. Everyone risks. But, in my opinion, there is nothing more terrible than the combat work of an attack pilot. Everything shoots at the attack aircraft. Starting from infantry rifles, ending with anti-aircraft artillery. An attack aircraft is a desirable prey for an enemy fighter. Almost all battles take place over enemy territory. Chuikov Vasily Ivanovich (Fig. 38) – Soviet military leader, Marshal of the Soviet Union, twice Hero of the Soviet Union.
Born on January 31 (February 12), 1900 in the village of Serebryanyye Prudy, now the Moscow Region, in a peasant family. Russian.
Since April 1918 in the Red Army, a cadet of the first Moscow military instructor courses of the Red Army in Moscow, participated in the suppression of the rebellion of the Left Social Revolutionaries in Moscow in July 1918. Member of the Civil War since the summer of 1918. He commanded a company in the brigade of R.F. Sievers on the Southern Front against the Don Army of General P.N. Krasnov. Continue reading
